1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (gas mk 4, 350°F). Peel, core and slice the apples and pears. 2. Place half the fruit in a baking dish (we used an oval, 28cm by 18cm, and 4cm high), and sprinkle with one tablespoon of granulated sugar. Add the rest of the fruit and again sprinkle with a tablespoon of granulated sugar. 3. In a bowl place the flour, caster sugar and butter. Rub together using your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. 4. Cover the fruit with the crumble mixture, roughly smoothing it but not pressing down. 5. Bake for about 45 minutes, until the crumble is lightly browned and the fruit is tender. Serve hot or cold. To make an apple crumble, just replace the pears with more apples.
